CURRENT PROGRAMME

Scope

In January 2017 approximately 135 students were registered with SKET. Each student's circumstances determine the school they attend. In the countryside distances from home usually mean a boarding school is appropriate but a few attend day schools. SKET deals with 35 secondary schools in two separate areas* of central Kenya, some having as many as 18 supported students whilst others have only one or two:

* Kajiado District, south west of the Capital Nairobi

* Murang’a District in the Central highlands

Case Histories

When young people in a poor society miss out on the school experience, some consequences are very predictable. Society loses out in general and so does the local community. For the individual, prospects for personal development become limited. Idleness can often lead to early motherhood for girls and for all there is a sense of a missed opportunity affecting life ahead of them.

Sometimes it is the case that midway through secondary school, fee arrears build up and a student is reluctantly sent home. Until the arrears are settled the student misses class and their studies suffer. At worst they may not return. Everyone loses in these circumstances.
